How far we have fallen!

We diagnosed Morton's Neuroma in my left foot almost three months ago. I purchased a pair of Vibram 5 Fingers and began running in them in order to strengthen my feet. (I didn't like the idea of cutting out nerves while my feet just kept getting weaker-- the traditional treatment.) But I've since had problems with cramps, first in my left calf and last week in my right. This is a recurring problem I've had for more than fifteen years, so I can't say it's just related to the 5 Fingers, in fact the left calf incident came when I was in running shoes.

I'm definately having to adjust my running style with the 5 fingers, but it's not new. I ran with a mid to forefoot plant when I was in my twenties, so I guess it will just take a while to build up... if I could get any consistency in my training. Injuries have definately set me back.

I'm lifting twice a week now, and watching my diet very carefully. I'm probably a little low on daily calories, but I'm trying to get down to "race weight" and don't need that many calories since I'm not getting in any significant mileage. I hope to be able to start accumulating mileage next week. I'll start with maybe five miles a day and build from there.

I ran a full 3.5 miles today! I started out slowly and built gradually, running 1.75 out without stopping. At the turnaround, I took a few minutes to stretch and then ran almost all of the way back without stopping. I paid attention to the way my calves felt and stopped a couple of times just to make sure they weren't cramping. I ran in regular running shoes, which I think I'll continue to do on my daily "long runs." On my shorter runs (1-2 miles) I'll wear the 5 Fingers and see how that builds. Next week I'll try a pair of trainers or racing flats for my afternoon runs. I may be able to build up to 100 mile weeks, yet, although it might take all summer.
